September is &uot;Healthy Aging Month&uot; and Faith in Action of Freeborn County is calling on Freeborn County residents to put their faith in action by volunteering to help their neighbors in need.
After last week, there are no doubt many neighbors in need. People can help by providing phone reassurance, friendly visiting, light housekeeping, minor home repairs, yardwork, respite care for family care givers, transportation and information and referral. Just a few hours a week can make a huge difference in someone’s life.
Volunteers are needed to help older residents in the community live healthier, happier and more independent lives. The aging population often undergoes stressful lifestyle changes, such as retirement and relocation. In addition, long-term illnesses such as heart disease, arthritis, diabetes, Alzheimer’s and cancer have a greater impact on this population. Volunteers can help older Americans remain active, healthy and involved in their communities and can help the aging population celebrate the wisdom and life experience that come only with time.
If you’ve ever considered helping, now is the time to do it. If you’ve recently been helped out by someone else, consider returning the favor.
The whole community &045; not just the older population &045; is so much richer when we help one another.
