WINDOM &045; The United South Central/Alden-Conger country squads won decisively in the four-team Windom Invitational Monday.
The girls finished with 30 points to runner-up Tracy-Milroy-Balaton’s 38. Windom was third with 72.
Lindsey Rauenhorst, who finished fourth, Megan Jensen (5th), Becca Bryson (6th), Joelle Elmer (7th), and Marah Robinson (8th) were able to pack up nicely to nail down the win for the Rebels. Jamie Klein and Katie Schultz, two of the Rebels’ top runners, were held out of the meet with minor injuries. The girls, currently ranked No. 4 in Minnesota at the mid-point of the season, has a won-lost record of 70-55 for a winning percentage of .933.
The boys completely dominated their division, taking the top six places and eight of the top nine to post a perfect score of 15 to runner-up Windom with 56. SW Star Unified was third with 78.
Eric Youngblom led the onslaught with a first-place finish. Brad Tomschin (2nd), Jacob Elmer (3rd), Greg Opseth (4th), Matt Mueller (5th), were the other scorers. Erik Melby (6th), Bryan Hauge (8th), and Spencer Niebuhr (9th) were the other frontrunners for the Rebels.
“Our top eight runners finished within 61 seconds,” said coach Kent Viesselman.
The boys are ranked 10th in Minnesota, and
have a won-lost record of 74-4 losses for a winning percentage of .949.
“Obviously, the
level of competition at Windom wasn’t exactly what we’ve gotten used to,” said Viesselman. “But it was nice to get a breather in our schedule, and certainly good for some of our less-experienced runners. Marah (Robinson), Greg (Opseth), and Bryan (Hauge) all got a chance to show that they can compete well at the varsity level. The Mega Meet, otherwise known as the Princeton Invitational (scheduled for Saturday), will more than make up for the soft spot in our schedule. There will be approximately 50 teams in our class. Normally eight of the top 10 teams and most of the top 10 individuals in the state show up.”
