BRAINERD &045; A second consecutive trip to the national tournament is not assured for Dan Breuer.

But it’s definitely not an impossibility.

Breuer, an Albert Lea High School graduate and a sophomore at Riverland Community College, shot a 78 Tuesday in the second and final day of the state/regional tournament at The Legacy near Brainerd. It was one stroke shy of qualifying him for nationals for the second year in a row.

As a team, the Blue Devils finished fourth in the men’s division of the Minnesota Community College Conference state tournament and sixth in Region XIII. The first-place team and top 10 individuals not on that team advance to nationals.

Breuer finished with a two-day, 36-hole total of 161 after shooting an 83 Monday.

Riverland totaled 646 strokes for the tournament. Host Central Lakes won both the state and region with 611.

Following Breuer for the Blue Devils were Dan King, 164; Kyle Fett, 170; Justin Hicks, 198; and David Judd 195. King shot the best round Tuesday, an 84, while Fett fired an 85.

Breuer still has hopes of playing in the national tournament next June in Chatauqua, N.Y. as an alternate.

&uot;In the event one of the other 10 qualifiers can’t play in the national tournament, he’s first in line,&uot; said RCC coach Dave Lillemon. &uot;In my nine years as coach, an alternate has gone eight times. There’s a very good possibility he could go but we won’t know until next spring.&uot;

The Blue Devils will have at least one national qualifier, however, as Allison Stutzman finished third in the women’s division. She shot a 92 Tuesday for a 36-hole total of 181. A graduate of Austin High School, Stutzman finished 69th in a field of about 100 in this year’s national tournament.
