Editorial: Snowmobilers should follow a few rules

Winter appears to have arrived and snowmobile enthusiasts are anxious to get out on the trails.
One group that often goes unnoticed is the Freeborn County Snowmobile Trail Association, who grooms the more than 250 miles of trails, among other things.
With little snowfall in the last couple years, membership is declining, making more difficult the upkeep of the trails enjoyed by so many.
Volunteers are the cornerstone of such organizations and those who enjoy snowmobiling should consider a membership in the association.
Of more pressing concern each year, is the antagonism
residents may habor against snowmobilers who simply don’t follow proper etiquette.
It’s imperative for riders to follow a few rules, and respect the rights and property of others.
Riders who litter, damage trees, shrubs or other natural features are generally not looked upon too kindly.
Neither are those who harass hikers, skiers, anglers or wildlife.
And for safety’s sake, riders should stay on marked trails or marked open roads and avoid the
use of alcohol. Whether driving a car or a snowmobile, a rider’s reaction time is hindered when alcohol is consumed.
Enjoy the season of snowmobiling but don’t forget to follow these few simple rules and safety tips.
