Editorial: Teachers inspired involvement

The fact that a record number of young people took part in last Tuesday’s election in one way or another holds promise for our future.

Many of those who could vote, did, and another 18 students from Todd Brist’s government class served as election judges across Freeborn County. A recent change in regulations allowed high school students to be election judges.

The students completed the election judge training and worked at the polling places after school. The fact that there were that many is very exciting.

Those who didn’t come forward to work as judges or who weren’t old enough to vote were still required to go to polling places to observe the election, as well as attend a public meeting.

History shows that the earlier you get involved in the political process, the longer you stay involved.

Attending meetings and voting is a simple way to get involved, and shows young people that they can indeed make a difference.

The hope is that these students will be life-long participants in the political process.

We applaud Brist and other area government teachers who encouraged their students to get involved last Tuesday.
