Whenever her father’s Army assignments sent him to a location where families could not go, she moved with her mother and brother back to Albert Lea, her mother’s hometown. Sally attended Hawthorne Elementary School and Central Junior High, and her family attended the First Methodist Church of Albert Lea.

After graduating from Kaiserlautern American High School in 1968, Sally attended San Jose State College in California. In 1973, she earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in sociology from Lone Mountain College in San Francisco.

Although she fought a long battle with schizophrenia, a disease that affected nearly every aspect of her life, Sally enjoyed recreational swimming and walking, celebrating holidays and birthdays with family members, and listening to the music of Elvis Presley.
