Swimmers pick up another dual win

Dual-meet victories were supposed to be tough to come by this season for the Albert Lea High School boys’ swimming and diving team.

Somebody must have forgot to tell the Tigers.

The locals picked up their second dual-meet win Thursday with a 95-84 decision of Winona in the ALHS pool. It was a come-from-behind victory for the Tigers, who trailed 71-63 with three events remaining.

Ben Schreiber, Josh Elwood, Josh Anderson and Matt Stoneking started the comeback, finishing first in the 200-yard freestyle relay in 1:40.33.

Then, the Tigers outscored the Winhawks 10-6 in the 100 backstroke as Ethan Berg was first in 59.74 seconds, Matt VanFossen third in 1:08.45 and Derek Nelson fifth in 1:13.87. It was even more one-sided in the 100 breast, where the Tigers outscored Winona 12-3 with Schreiber first in 1:03.33, Anderson second in 1:08.10 and Chris Dorman fourth in 1:17.34.

Berg, Stoneking, Schreiber and VanFossen iced the victory with a first in the 400 freestyle relay, clocking 3:43.75.

Elwood had two individual firsts, winning the 50 freestyle in 23.50 and the 100 butterfly in 58.71. Berg won the 200 individual medley in 2:17.35. Berg, Anderson, Elwood and VanFossen won the 200 medley were first in the 200 medley relay in 1:50.42.

Other ALHS places: Schreiber, second, 200 freestyle, 1:56.39; Stoneking, fourth, 200 freestyle, 2:10.75 and third, 500 freestyle, 6:16.49; Drew Klick, fifth, 200 freestyle, 2;12.49 and fourth, 500 freestyle, 6:16.49; VanFossen, second, 200 IM, 2:26.46; Anderson, third, 50 freestyle, 25.34; Jordan Elleby, fourth, 50 freestyle, 26.51 and third, 100 freestyle, 57.78; Dorman, fifth, 100 butterfly, 1:28.26; Peter Drachmann, fifth, 100 freestyle, 1:04.95; Tyler Petersen, fifth, 500 freestyle, 6:21.98.

The Tigers’ junior varsity won 57-10. Taking individual firsts for Albert Lea: Dan Howard, 50 freestyle; Mitch Jones, 100 freestyle; Petersen, 100 backstroke; and Henry Helgerson, 100 breaststroke.

The Tigers compete in the Austin Invitational Saturday.
