CLEARWATER (AP) &045; Three members of a North Dakota family were killed and four other people were in critical condition from a head-on crash on Interstate 94 on Sunday, the State Patrol said.
A westbound Cadillac SUV lost control on the freeway just before 4 p.m. near Clearwater, which is about five miles southeast of St. Cloud. The SUV crossed the median and hit a Mazda minivan head on, State Patrol spokesman Kevin Smith said.
Three family members in the minivan were killed &045; the father, who was in his 40s, a boy who was 7 or 8, and a girl who was 3 or 4, Smith said.
The mother and their 12-year-old boy were flown to Regions Hospital in St. Paul, where they were in critical condition, Smith said.
Their names and hometown were being withheld pending notification of relatives, Smith said.
The two people in the SUV &045; a couple from the Twin Cities metro area &045; were also in critical condition at St. Cloud Hospital, Smith said.
Speed and slippery roads may have been factors, Smith said.
&uot; The roads were slick in the area at the time,&uot; Smith said, adding that there were indications the SUV was traveling too fast for the conditions.
Authorities had to close I-94 in both directions for about 2 1/2 hours because of the crash. It
was the second time in two days that a fatal accident had forced a closure of the freeway.
Authorities on Sunday identified the Canadian truck driver who died Saturday morning after the tanker he was driving crashed into a bridge abutment on Interstate 94 in Maple Grove, about 15 miles northwest of Minneapolis.
Steven M. Toth, 51, of Bradford, Ontario, died at the scene of injuries he suffered in the crash, the Hennepin County medical examiner’s office said.
Saturday’s crash prompted the Patrol to close lanes in both directions between Rogers and Maple Grove for several hours to check the bridge for damage.
The State Patrol’s St. Cloud district handled at least seven other crashes with injuries and many minor crashes Sunday. Traffic on U.S. Highway 10 near Royalton was tied up after a multi-vehicle crash involving 20 to 30 vehicles. There were no serious injuries, and the scene was cleared in about two hours, the St. Cloud Times reported.
The snowstorm that passed through Sunday afternoon dropped 0.8 inches of snow on St. Cloud, said Bill Harrison, a forecaster with the National Weather Service.
