Marvel Niebuhr, 77, Alden

Our family member and friend, Marvel Mae Niebuhr, age 77, of Alden, died on Wednesday, March 9, 2005, surrounded by her children at her home following a short battle with cancer.
The memorial service will be at 11 a.m. Tuesday, March 15, at Redeemer Lutheran Church in Alden with the Rev. Peter Soli officiating.
Visitation is at Bruss – Heitner Funeral Home in Wells on Monday, March 14, from 4-8 p.m. and one hour prior to services at church on Tuesday.
Interment will be in Alden Cemetery.
Marvel was born March 16, 1927, the daughter of Percy and Sophia (Krohnberg) Bartelt in Waseca County.
Marvel graduated from Waldorf School and helped out on the family farm.
On Aug. 21, 1947, she and Marvin Niebuhr were married in Wells.
Following the wedding, Marvin farmed with his father.
The couple was blessed with four children: Chuck, Bruce, Brenda and Darcy.
Marvel was employed with Roger’s Bar.
In 1972, Marvel and Marvin were into the Cafe business, named M & M Cafe.
In 1974, the couple went into the restaurant business, named Club 90, where she was known for her barbecued ribs and prime rib.
They also owned M & M Ice Cream Parlor and Conger Inn.
After the loss of her husband Marvin on Sept. 27, 1991, Marvel worked at Cafe Don’L and HyVee.
Marvel enjoyed camping and fishing with her family, watching the birds and looking at the geese on Alden Lake, inspiring people and reading.
Marvel loved cooking for people and traveling to casinos.
Marvel was a longtime member of the American Legion and VFW Auxiliary.
She was a member of Redeemer Lutheran Church in Alden, and was a Boy Scout leader.
She was also on a bowling team for many years.
Survivors include her four children: two sons, Chuck and his wife Thelma Niebuhr and Bruce and his wife Wendy Niebuhr, all of Alden, and two daughters, Brenda and her husband Mike Rebelein of Wells and Darcy and her husband Jeremy Johnson of Conger; 11 grandchildren; and 16 great-grandchildren, including two on the way.
The grandchildren and great-grandchildren were Marvel’s pride and joy.
Grandma Marvel will always be close to their hearts and they will remember the good advice she loved to give.
Also surviving are her brother and sisters: Gordon and his wife Louise Bartelt of Waldorf, Jeanette Schultz of Wells and her special friend Jim Theede of Wells, and Mary Lou and husband Dean Radke of Bena; brother-in- law, Kenneth Niebuhr of Alden; sister-in-law,
Lois Brandt of Mapleton; one aunt: Ruby Hinkley of Cedar Rapids, Iowa; and many relatives and friends.
She was preceded in death by her parents; husband Marvin in 1991; two brothers-in-law, Gene Brandt and Howard Schultz; and one sister-in-law, Janet Niebuhr.
