33rd annual Bike-A-Thon set for May 7

The 33rd annual 100-mile Freeborn County American Cancer Society Bike-A-Thon will be held beginning at 6 a.m. Saturday, May 7, starting and ending at the Sibley warming house on Front Street and Maplehill Drive. Mark Harig and Dan Springborg are serving as co-chairmen of the event.

The Bike-A-Thon is the annual spring event that raises money for the American Cancer Society’s programs of service, education, advocacy and research.

The 100-mile Bike-A-Thon is all on blacktop roads and well-patrolled. The route travels on county roads through Glenville, Gordonsville, Myrtle, Hayward, Geneva, Hartland, Freeborn and Alden, and finishes in Albert Lea.

The ride is open to riders of all ages. There will be food and water stops located in the towns the route travels, and support vehicles will travel the course to provide assistance for those who need help.

At a committee meeting held March 21 at the Union Center, Harig announced the following committee chairs:

Safety and routing – Mark Harig.

Communications – Albert Lea Amateur Radio Club, Herb Neale and Marsha Gold.

Start and finish – Glen and LeAnn Juveland.

Medical and ambulance – Brad Niebuhr.

Prizes – Scott Martin.

Rest area – Bob Stephenson and Ken Dreyling.

Route posting – Kerry Bangert.

Bank night – Eunice Hatleli.

People and bike pickup – Rich Bolinger.

Food – VFW: Marcia Peterson. Alden: Donna Schmidt.

Team challenge – Kent and Scott Erlandson.

Publicity – Wanda Dorman and Mike Woitas.

The next committee meeting will be at 5:30 p.m. Monday, April 4, at the Union Center in Albert

Lea.

Anyone interested in riding in the Bike-A-Thon can pick up a pledge sheet and waiver form at Martin’s Cycling and Fitness, KATE Radio, Power 96, Hanson Tire and Wells Fargo.
