Marie DeRaad, 98, Albert Lea

Funeral services for Marie W. DeRaad, age 98, of Albert Lea, will be held 10:30 a.m. Thursday, April 21, at the Hollandale Reformed Church. The Rev. Mark Volkers will officiate. Interment will be in the Hollandale Cemetery. Visitation will be from 5 to 7 p.m. Wednesday, April 20, at the Bayview/Freeborn Funeral Home, and one hour prior to the service at the church on Thursday.

Marie died on Sunday, April 17, 2005, at St. John’s Lutheran home.

Marie W. DeRaad was born on June 9, 1906, in Nijverdal, Netherlands, the daughter of Henry and Alice (Kortman) Flim. She came to the United States with her family in 1918, settling in Sioux Center, Iowa. In the early 1920s they came to Hollandale. Marie went to school in Sioux Center. On June 8, 1934, Marie was united in marriage to John DeRaad in Hollandale. He preceded her in death in 1988. Marie was a member of the Hollandale Reformed Church where she was active in the Mary Martha Circle. She enjoyed crocheting, knitting, reading, and baking. She was especially known for her Almond Bars and for speaking &uot;Yankee Dutch.&uot;

Survivors include her children: Jean and her husband Gerrit Molenaar of North Mankato, and Henry and his wife Beverly DeRaad of Owatonna; her grandchildren:Jerry, Larry, and James Molenaar, Rebecca Schertler, and Jay DeRaad; nine great-grandchildren; and nieces and nephews.

Marie was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, John; her sisters: Dena Flim and Alice Flim; her brother, John Flim and his wife Sybil; and her nephew, Helge Flim.
