Have you thanked a teacher this week?

It’s Teacher Appreciation Week, a time set aside to honor the dedication, passion, and caring nature of teachers. Not only are teachers the backbone of our nation’s education system, they are a guiding force in helping our children develop into healthy, happy, and successful adults.

Teaching is not like it used to be in the 1950s or ’60s. Teachers today must keep up on effective ways to reach a diverse classroom. They work to find creative ways to reach troubled children. They have to make sure students pass the required tests to ensure they graduate. They have to keep an eye open for weapons and drugs and other harmful things. In a phrase, they need to make sure no child is left behind.

We regularly hear about teachers who go the extra mile, try the new ideas and challenge their students to be the best they can be. We are fortunate to have so many excellent teachers who are willing to do exactly those things.

And they can’t do it alone. They need strong partnerships with parents and other community members. If a teacher asks for your help, be sure to try and give it. They only have the best interests of our students at heart.

Be sure you thank a teacher this week.
