Rebel track teams advance

NEW RICHLAND &045; The United South Central boys’ and girls’ track teams each won team championships at the Subsection 5A track and field meet at New Richland Thursday.
The girls scored 97 1/3 points to outdistance Maple River (82 1/3) and NRHEG (72 1/3). NRHEG
had edged the Rebels by 1/2-point margin a week ago in the Gopher Conference meet.
The girls were led by individual gold medal performances by Rebecca Leland in the 800-meter Run, Lindsey Rauenhorst in the high jump, Amelia Treptow in the pole vault, Becca Bryson in the triple jump (new meet record), and a double-gold by Ciara Christenson in the 100-meter high hurdles and the 300 hurdles (new meet record). Also joining the gold rush was the 4×400 team of Bryson, Leland, Megan Jensen, and Christenson.
“The Girls have had a tough schedule the last two weeks,” commented Kent Viesselman,
“but they looked rested
Thursday night. We had a number of very good performances. Certainly among those would be the 1-2 finish of Becca (Bryson), and Kallie (Rollenhagen) in the triple jump.
Both
were over 35 feet. Another big event for us was the 2-3 finish of Taylor Allis and Amber Erickson in the 3200.
The Rebels were without the services of ace distance runner Jamie Klein, who had been diagnosed with a stress fracture in her foot earlier in the week.
The biggest surpise in the boys’ competition was the ease with which the USC/AC boys captured the team title, winning by 46 points over runner-up NRHEG. The Rebel distance and throwing events proved the difference. USC/AC’s Brad Musser, Jesse Courrier, and Wade Miller went 1-2-3 in the shot put and came right back with Courrier and Musser going 1-2 in the discus. Eric Youngblom, Matt Mueller, and Andrew Mueller placed first, second, and fifth in the 3200, with Brad Tomschin and Bryan Hauge first and fourth in the 800. Matt Mueller, Youngblom and Shane Bias teamed up for second, fourth, and sixth, respectively, in the 1600.
The Rebels also picked up three medals in the triple jump, three more in each the pole vault and the 400.
“We’ve developed some pretty good depth during the course of the season,” commented Viesselman. “The credit for that has to go to our assistant coaches Joe Guanella (distances),
Brandon Alphs (Pole Vault),
Nikki Phillips (horizontal jumps) and Darin & Eric Allis (throws).
Theyve done a good job, and the kids have been more than willing to try new events. It’s worked out well.”
When the dust had cleared, 15 boys and 18 girls had advanced to the section meet to be held at Mankato West High School this Saturday. Field events are scheduled to begin at 9:30. Prelims in the running events get under way at 10 a.m., with the finals in the running events scheduled to get begin at 11 a.m.
