In 1948, Shorty took over the family farm following his father’s death. In 1974, he decided to install drainage tile for the farm. People asked about the project so much that he started a successful drainage tiling business, which he ran for the next 20 years. Starting in 1988, he combined his love of warm weather and camping by going every year to Mathis, Texas for the winter. He will be missed not only by his family and many friends, but also by several casinos that will no longer be receiving his generous donations.

Shorty is survived by his wife, Ida of Bricelyn; four children: Mike and his wife Lu-Ann of Bricelyn, Pat and her husband Dave Saari of Mounds View, Minn., Barb and her husband Andy Lindsay of Maple Grove, Minn., and Allen and his wife LeAnne of Phoenix, Ariz.; and five grandchildren: Steve Lindsay, Chris Lindsay, Dan Lindsay, Nick Saari and Brian Saari. He is also survived by three sisters: Helen Coltvet of Clarion, Iowa, Virg Myers of Swaledale, Iowa, and Phyllis Erdal of Fairfax, Minn.; one brother, Harley Jergensen of Colorado and Arizona; brother-in-law, Don Anderson and his wife Cindy of Northfield; as well as numerous nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; and sisters: Gertrude Cameron and Bette Anderson.
