MANKATO &045; The USC/AC Boys and Girls Track teams both made strong appearances at the Section 2A Track and Field Championships at Mankato last Saturday. The girls finished in second place, advancing three individuals to the state meet. The boys finished in a tie for sixth place, advancing one.
Ciara Christenson
finished first in the 300 hurdles and second in the 100 hurdles to advance in both of those events. Becca Bryson and Kallie Rollenhagen were impressive in finishing 1-2 in the triple jump. They both will also advance to the state meet.
Other strong performances for the girls included a fourth place finishes by Bryson in the long jump and Andrea Bias in the 200 meters, a fifth place finish by Rebecca Leland in the 800, and a sixth place finish by Taylor Allis in the 3200. The 4×400 team of Bryson, Leland, Megan Jensen and Christenson narrowly missed a trip to state, finishing second in that event. “We were closing fast on the leader, but ran out of room,” commented Viesselman.
The girls’ 4×800 team of Holly Theede, Marie Cochand, Allis, and Dani Drugg finished fifth. The girls’ 4×200 also turned in a good performance, finishing sixth in their best time of the season. Members of that team are: Megan Jensen, Lindsey Rauenhorst, Rebecca Leland, and Andrea Bias.
For the boys, Brad Tomschin looked very strong in winning the 800. Brad’s time of 1:59.10 is his best of the season. Eric Youngblom cut nearly 10 seconds off his best time time in the 3200 to finish in the medals in that event.
The Boys 4×800 team of Bryan Hauge, Erik Melby, Youngblom, and Alex Ramaker finish third with their best time of the season, as did the 4×400 team of Ramaker, Hauge, Jordan Stenzel, and Tomschin.
“I’m really proud of the way all of our kids
have competed this season,” commented Viesselman, “and Saturday was no exception. We had a total of 18 personal records set at the section meet. That’s really a good team performance for this time of the season. We took a total of 14 boys and 18 girls to the section meet, and every one of them gave their best.”
Ciara and Brad will have prelims Friday night, with finals in those events on Saturday. The Friday night session gets under way at approximately 3 p.m. The Saturday session begins at 9 a.m. The triple jump prelims and Finals will be held at noon Saturday.
