Editorial: Code of conduct a step in the right direction

With the increased escalation of parental violence surrounding youth sporting events &045; one father was killed a few years ago following a hockey game &045; we applaud District 241’s decision to proceed with a code of conduct policy. We hope it will eventually include disciplinary action for any fan who gets out of hand during a sporting or school-sponsored event.
A committee comprised of coaches, parents, fans and student athletes has worked to develop the code which outlines seven principles for behavior at school events. Among the principles are:
–
Creating and supporting a positive athletic experience for student athletes
–
Athletics be conducted in an environment that teaches values and ethics, promotes positive competition and enriches the lives of the athletes.
–
Promoting high-quality programs through strong leadership, clear policy, adequate resources and effective organization.
–
Recognizing a coach’s role in making the student athletic experience appropriate, positive and educational.
Parents are passionate about supporting their children &045; as they should be &045; however when that support turns violent and threatens the positive lessons intended by athletic participation, it must be addressed.
School athletics should be the icing on the cake of learning, not the end-all of a student’s educational experience. It’s important all fans remember most of these athletes will not play their sport at a professional level. And only a small percentage will even go on to play at the collegiate level.
The lessons these kids learn in the playing arena should remain positive and the school board is taking a proactive step through its exploration of a code of conduct to ensure the experience remains so for athletes.
