Last-second drive ends just short for G-E

HOUSTON &045; The Glenville-Emmons football team had a hard time getting its offense going against Houston, but the determined Wolverines were in the game until the final minute.
G-E trailed 14-8 late in the fourth quarter before mounting one of its best drives since its second quarter score, but the Wolverines were unable to punch a possible tying score in from the 4-yard line giving the Hurricanes the win.
G-E started that final drive deep in its own territory, as was the case much of the night, but Aaron Wuerflein found Justin Flattum for a 26-yard pass play that got the chains moving.
The team motored down the field but could not cap it off with the score.
Houston was able to put the pressure on the Wolverines by scoring the go-ahead touchdown with 1 minute, 30 seconds left in the game.
Glenville-Emmons took an 8-6 lead into the fourth quarter thanks to a second quarter pitch and catch from Jared Knutson to Michael Greibrok that covered 60 yards.
Knutson found Wuerflein for the two-point conversion to go up 8-0.
The Hurricanes would answer with a score of their own, but missed the extra point to go into the locker room trailing by two. G-E did cut down on its penalties getting whistled for just four in the game and the defense forced two fumbles.
However, the team did struggle running the ball after doing it with ease the week before against Spring Grove.
&uot;We improved on the defensive side of the ball from our first game, but we still made several mental mistakes that hurt us offensively,&uot; said Wolverine head coach Derek Nelson.
&uot;If we could combine the offensive effort that we got against Spring Grove (last week) with the defense we played against Houston we would be a pretty tough team.&uot;
The loss dropped Glenville-Emmons to 0-2 overall while Houston improved to 1-2 on the season.
The Wolverines will now prepare for their homecoming matchup against Granada-Huntley-East Chain this Friday.
