ST. PAUL (AP) &045; A 13-year-old boy was hospitalized in critical condition with head injuries after being severely beaten with a bat while talking with a teenage girl, St. Paul police said.
The girl was also assaulted on a residential sidewalk Friday night, police said.
Police said a sports utility vehicle with four people inside pulled up to the teenagers and a man with a bat got out and yelled, &uot;Are you a blood?&uot;
The man then began beating both the boy and girl with the bat, police said. The boy was admitted to Regions Hospital; police said the girl suffered non-life-threatening injuries.
Detectives said there is no indication either of the victims were affiliated with gangs. The only apparent motive was that the boy was wearing a red sweat shirt, police said.
The suspect was in his early 20s with a muscular build and black, spiked hair. He was approximately 6 feet tall and was wearing a blue shirt with the words &uot;New York&uot; on the front, police said.
The truck was described as possibly gray.
