MINNEAPOLIS &045; Seniors Marie Halvorson and Kim Staloch didn’t walk away with titles at the 2005 Girls’ State Tennis Meet, but the doubles team did advance to Saturday’s action which was an accomplishment in itself.
&8220;We have not made it to Saturday for some time, and I
am very proud of the way they played,&8221; said USC head coach Randy Halvorson.
&8220;It is quite an accomplishment and for everyone who makes it to state it is a showcase for those who want to play tennis in college.&8221;
Halvorson and Staloch dropped their first match to Jenna Olson and Megan Carlson of Pine City 2-6, 7-6 (7-5), 6-2, Friday.
The tandem rebounded with a convincing win in their first consolation match winning 6-4, 6-2 over Rebecca Jarvi and Ashley Rieland of Sauk Centre to move on to finals day Saturday.
However, they concluded their run when Lindsay McLean and Carrie Jansen of Foley downed them 6-4, 3-6, 4-6.
The Rebels also got a solid showing from senior No. 1 singles player Kate Ostrowski.
Ostrowski got her state tournament off to a good start beating Katie Edin of Staples-Motley in the first round.
She had to work overtime to take the first set 7-6 (8-6) before dropping a tiebreaker in the second set 6-7 (5-7).
However, she left no doubt in the final set dominating with a 6-1 victory.
Ostrowski’s run would come to an end against defending champion Alyssa Palen of Rochester Lourdes who earned a 6-1, 6-0 victory.
&8220;There was no doubt throughout this season that she was our No. 1 player,&8221; said coach Halvorson.
&8220;She works so hard and to win the opening round was very pleasing to her.&8221;
