Editorial: Help make the holidays jollier for those in need

&8216;Tis the season to be jolly, not to mention generous.
The Salvation Army kicked off its kettle campaign today, and hopes to raise $120,000 during the holiday season to make things a little merrier for those less fortunate.
The drive doesn’t just benefit people during December; the Salvation Army’s main fund-raiser strives to raise enough to help people all through the year.
Funds raised through Red Kettle donations help the Salvation Army offer after school and summer day care programs for low-income families; temporary shelter, rental assistance and fuel assistance; a food pantry; budget counseling to help families achieve economic independence and a number of other programs.
During the holiday season, they provide food baskets and food vouchers to families who otherwise might not be able to afford Thanksgiving and Christmas meals. They also organize a toy shop, where struggling parents can choose toys to give to their children as Christmas gifts.
It’s very easy to give and to make people’s lives a little merrier; simply drop some loose change, bills or a check in the kettle when passing by. Things are also easy for those who like to do business on line. For the first time this year, retailers, like Wal-Mart, are including a virtual Red Kettle on their Web sites. This allows people who do much of their shopping online to contribute just like someone visiting the actual store. Red Kettle contributions may also be made at the Salvation Army Web site at www.salvationarmyusa.org.
Volunteers are also needed to man the kettles. Contact the Salvation Army if you are interested in helping.
People in this area have a reputation for being very generous in time of need. This is a chance to help people right here at home who need help. Need has no season. Please give generously if you are able.
