Will the BCS luck out?

As I write I realize that I will probably jinx this from happening but here we go anyway.

I am a college football fan.

I hate the BCS.

However, if things remain as they are now the bowl system may luck into one of the better championship game matchups in recent memory.

Both USC and Texas have proven to be the top two teams all season long, and a Rose Bowl tilt with those two would make for a fun sports New Year.

Sure, I would rather see the traditional Big Ten-Pac 10 battle but there are several interesting storylines in this game.

– Reggie Bush.

If you needed any more proof that this is the right guy to win the Heisman this weekend should have done it.

Any time one player can put up half a thousand yards of total offense by himself it is worthy of a trophy of some sort, and in my opinion Bush’s should be striking that oh-so-familiar pose.

– Vince Young.

As of right now the one player with a real chance of stealing the Heisman from Bush.

He is a quarterback still better recognized for his running ability than his passing arm.

But he, like Bush, has the ability to confound defenses and take the ball the distance on any given play.

– Carroll vs. Brown.

On one hand, you would have the &8220;it&8221; coach of the moment in Pete Carroll who has won two straight national titles and made everyone wonder why USC was so down for so long.

On the other sideline is Mack Brown who has been praised as a recruiter but questioned as an in-game coach.

He hasn’t had an opportunity like this (largely because of Oklahoma) and it would be very interesting to see how he rises to the occasion.

– Just a little history.

If the Trojans were able to win it would be a historic way for Carroll, Bush, Matt Leinart and the rest to wrap up the most successful three-year run.

While the Trojans and Longhorns are still steaming toward a possible championship matchup the weekend brought to a close the regular season for several teams, and with it some questions to chew over for the next month or so.

My top five:

1. Firelloydcarrnow.com.

Just wondering if that site will be bombarded with hits now.

John Cooper lost his job largely because he couldn’t knock off the Wolverines.

Now, Carr can’t get past Jim Tressel’s Buckeyes.

What is the Maize and Blue to do?

2.

After watching a promising start to the season degenerate into a beating at the hands of the Iowa Hawkeyes will Glenn Mason get the contract extension he was promised?

That question might trump the other question of would he sign it?

3. Why was Auburn so determined to fire Tommy Tuberville a few seasons ago?

He only led the Tigers to an undefeated campaign last season and is currently 9-2 and tied atop its division of the SEC despite losing four first round draft picks to the NFL this past season.

4. Staying the the SEC, the Tennessee loss to Vanderbilt had to complete one of the worst seasons for a highly-hyped team in a long time.

The Vols were national champion picks by some and now they will not even be going bowling at all.

Does that go back to the old saying &8220;if you have two quarterbacks you don’t have a quarterback?&8221;

5. Does anyone else wonder why Lou Holtz is an ESPN analyst for college football when he has left one probation riddled mess after another during his tenure as a head football coach?

He didn’t seem to add much to the conversation Saturday other than the obvious.
