Beginning this week, Minnesotans have a new opportunity to show support for the state’s military members and their families. New license plates illustrated with an American flag, a bald eagle, and the words “Support Our Troops” are now available for purchase for Minnesota passenger vehicles, one-ton pickup trucks and recreational vehicles.
State Senator Dan Sparks (DFL-Austin) said the idea for the new license plates was part of a bipartisan veterans’ support package passed during the 2005 legislative session. The expected $675,000 generated from the sales of the plates during their first year of production will go toward veterans’ outreach programs and support for active-duty military families.
“When it comes to supporting our states active-duty troops, veterans, and all of their families, politics should be the last thing on anyone’s mind,” Sen. Sparks said. “I am very proud to be part of the bipartisan group that voted to support the creation of these new plates.
In addition to the standard $18.50 license plate fee, a minimum fee of $30 will be attached to the purchase of the “Support Our Troops” plates. The fee will be dedicated to a special fund, which will be equally distributed to the Minnesota’s Department of Military Affairs and Department of Veterans Affairs. The $30 fee is tax deductible and consumers can contribute more than $30 if desired.
