AUSTIN &045; The Faribault Bethlehem Academy Cardinals easily handled the Glenville-Emmons Wolverines 82-45 Friday night in Austin to advance to the second round of the sub-section 1A west playoffs.

Diminutive senior forward Beth Hanson scored 30 points and FBA guard Brittany DeGrood added 18 to lead the Cardinals into their second-round game against the Randolph Rockets, who defeated Concordia Academy of Bloomington in the late Friday game.

The Cardinals forced 33 G-E turnovers and jumped out to a huge second half lead on the strength of Hanson’s inside play. Up 40-27 at the break, Bethlehem Academy went on a 23-7 run, which included nine from Hanson, that essentially ended the competitive part of the game.

&8220;Our defense did a good job of putting on the full-court press,&8221; said Hanson, whose season-high is 37 points. &8220;We were able to turn a lot of those turnovers into easy layups.&8221;

The Wolverines didn’t go down without a fight, though. Sophomore center Jordan VanRyswyk had

20 points, mostly in the paint, to bolster an otherwise meager G-E offense.

But the high volume of turnovers was a hill the Wolverines couldn’t climb.

&8220;We’re young and we didn’t do very well at taking care of the ball. We did a decent job in the first

half,&8221; said Wolverines’ coach Lisa Ziebell. &8220;But we struggle with the press. I figured it would probably be where they got us.&8221;

The Cardinals took their game outside in the second half, getting three 3-pointers from DeGrood, all during a stretch that saw FBA build as much as a 38-point advantage.

In addition to Hanson and DeGrood’s offensive output, Bethlehem Academy got 10 points from Jenna Sheridan, nine from Kesley Drentlaw and seven from Lana Brand.

Ashley Lau had nine for the Wolverines and Karrisa Olson had eight., Chelsey Ziebell, Kara Honsey

and April Kosuge had two apiece. Glenville-Emmons finished its season with an 8-20 record.

&8220;That’s what you call a full schedule,&8221; Ziebell said.

The Cardinals improved to 17-7 overall and will travel to the Mayo Civic Center Monday to face Randolph in the 8 p.m. game.
