Jay Ashling, 24, of Waseca

Funeral services for Jay B. Ashling, age 24, of Waseca and formerly of Albert Lea, will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, Feb. 11, at Zion Lutheran Church. The Rev. Paul Aldrich will officiate. Interment will be in the Marshall Cemetery. Visitation is 5 to 7 p.m. Friday at Bayview/ Freeborn Funeral Home and one hour prior to the services at the church.

Jay peacefully went into God’s hands on Wednesday, Feb. 8, 2006, at St. Marys Hospital in Rochester, from complex congenital heart disease.

Jay Brandon Ashling was born on Jan. 23, 1982, at Holy Family Hospital, Estherville, Iowa, to Rick and Bonnie Ashling. He was baptized at his home on Jan. 30, 1982, by the Rev. A. Berger and received the declaration of holy baptism on Feb. 28, 1982, at Immanuel Lutheran Church, Estherville, Iowa. On April 24, 1994, he was confirmed in the Lutheran faith at Immanuel Lutheran Church, Estherville, Iowa.

Jay attended grade school and middle school in Estherville, Iowa, and moved with his family to Albert Lea, on March 30, 1994. He was a 2000 graduate of Albert Lea High School. He graduated from the construction electrician program at Riverland Community College in May 2002 and then enrolled in the water quality science program at Vermilion Community College in Ely, Minn. In July 2004, he moved to Waseca, Minn., and was employed by Quality Flow Systems, Inc., in New Prague, Minn. In the summers from June 1998 to August 2003, he was employed by the Albert Lea City Park Department.

One of the happiest days of Jay’s life was Sept. 10, 2005, when he was united in marriage to Stacy Weisinger at the Ely United Methodist Church.

Jay was an avid outdoorsman hunting ducks, geese, pheasants, bear, and deer in four states. He spent much time researching on his own the habitat and species of wildlife. He participated in shooting sports at the Minnesota Horse and Hunt Club, Waseca Sportsmen’s Club, and the Winton Sportsmen’s Club. He loved hunting with his friends, but especially with his dad, his hunting partner, who hunted and fished with him since he was 3 years old.

He was a member and contributor to Ducks Unlimited. He was involved with the Water Club and Wingshooters Club at Vermilion Community College and was a member of Amateur Trapshooting Association. He competed and placed in the Fish and Wildlife regional and state FFA competitions during his high school years.

Survivors include his loving wife, Stacy of Waseca; parents, Rick and Bonnie Ashling of Albert Lea; one sister, Jana Ashling of Mankato; grandmother, Peggy Ashling of Marshall; and one uncle, Jack Ashling of Marshall; mother-in-law, Barb Weisinger of Winton; father-in-law, Neil Weisinger of Winton; sister-in-law, Jenny Weisinger of Coon Rapids; brothers-in-law, Wesley Weisinger and Darrin Weisinger of Winton; and many cousins and friends.

Jay was preceded in death by his paternal grandfather, Donald Ashling, and maternal grandparents, Arnold and Katharine Cornell.

The family would like to pay a special tribute to Dr. David J. Driscoll of the Mayo Clinic for his excellent managed care and concern for Jay for the past 24 years.
