The funeral service for Norman Ellard Oakland will be held at 1 p.m. Monday, March 6, at the St. John’s Lutheran Home Chapel. The Rev. Jeff Laeger-Hagemeister will officiate. Burial will be in Hillcrest Cemetery. Visitation will be from 4 to 7 p.m. Sunday at Bonnerup Funeral Chapel and one hour before the service at the chapel. Military honors will be accorded by the Albert Lea veterans’ organizations.

Norman died on Thursday, March 2, 2006, at St. John’s Lutheran Home where he had lived since 2004. He was 84 years old.

Norman was born in Nunda Township, Freeborn County, the son of Jacob and Inga (Thompson) Oakland. He attended rural school near Emmons. During World War II he served in the U.S. Army from 1942 to 1945 in the United States and in Panama as a lineman laying down communication lines.

On Aug. 1, 1943, Norman was united in marriage with Delores Freeman in Glenville. During his life Norman had worked as a farmhand, milkman for Marigold Dairy, and Arnolds Plumbing in Albert Lea.

Norman was a lifetime member of the VFW, and Plumbers and Pipefitters Union 6 since 1956. He was an outdoorsman and enjoyed fishing and hunting. He also looked forward to talking with friends and spending time with his dog, Cricket.

Norman is survived by three children: Nancy Oakland of Rochester, Roger Oakland of Rochester, and William Walker and his wife, Deborah of Albert Lea; two grandchildren: Robert J. Oakland of Ramsey, Minn. and Alexander W. Walker of Rochester; one brother, Robert (Donna) Oakland of Albert Lea; three sisters: Eleanor Buchanon of Northwood, Iowa, Elaine (Jim) Hill of Northwood, Iowa and Idella Hinds of Albert Lea.

He was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Delores in 2000; daughter, Linda in 1997; son, Larry

in 2004; four brothers: George, Kenny, Lawrence, and Walter; one sister, Ingabor Britzman; and daughter-in-law, Lorraine Oakland.
