Funeral services for Richard J. Sigurdson, age 89, of Albert Lea, will be at 2 p.m. Friday, April 21, at Central Freeborn Lutheran Church. The Rev. Linda Gunderson will officiate. Interment will be in Hillcrest Cemetery with Military Honors accorded by the Freeborn County Veterans Organizations. Visitation is 5 to 8 p.m. Thursday at Bayview/Freeborn Funeral Home and one hour prior to the services at the Church.

Richard passed away Sunday, April 16, 2006, at St. Marys Hospital in Rochester.

Richard Joseph Sigurdson was born Oct. 9, 1916, and was adopted from The Little Red Stocking in Minneapolis when he was 1-year-old by Gilbert and Anna Sigurdson. He was baptized and confirmed at Central Freeborn Lutheran Church and lived in the Hartland area all his life. On Aug. 8, 1941, Richard was united in marriage to Doris Dorothy Demmer at the Hartland Lutheran Church. He worked at E. F. Johnson in Waseca before entering the service in the fall of 1941. Richard received his basic training at Camp Crowder in Missouri and served in England and France during World War II. After his discharge, he was employed at Ray Olson Oldsmobile and the Ford Garage as a car salesman, retiring in 1978. After retiring, Richard and his wife refinished furniture for 10 years. The couple enjoyed their many fishing and deer hunting trips to northern Minnesota. Richard and Doris loved to travel, having made a trip to Alaska with a camper and to Rome, Italy, as well as many other places of interest. Richard was a member of Central Freeborn Lutheran Church, the American Legion, VFW, and the Elks.

Survivors include brothers-in-law: David Demmer, Boyd and his wife, Dorothy Demmer, and Lyle and his wife, Mary Demmer; sisters-in-law: Dorothy and her husband, Ellsworth Gulbrandson, Verdelle and her husband, Philip Hansen, Arlyss and her husband, Richard Haug, Devonna and her husband, Gerald Olson, and Norma Demmer; and many nieces and nephews to cherish his memory.

Richard was preceded in death by his parents; his wife; brothers-in-law: Wallace Demmer, Melvin and Edra Demmer, Alvin and Luella Jensen, Charles and Oriet Ribbe, Ruth Demmer, Lester Demmer; and nieces and nephews cherish his memory.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be given to the donor’s choice.
