RED WING &045; Despite being bumped up a class to AA, the USC/AC girls’ and boys’ track teams gave a good account of themselves last week at the Section 1AA True Team Track Meet.

The girls finished second in the 10-team field. New Prague won the competition with 545 points, followed by the Rebels who scored 456 points. New Prague will advance to the State True Team Meet at Stillwater this Saturday.

Finishing first in their respective events were: Rebecca Leland in the 800, Becca Bryson in the triple jump and Sabrina Bushlack in the high jump.

The best event for the Rebels was the high jump, where Bushlack and Katie Schultz went first and third.

Another highlight for USC/AC fans was the continued improvement of the 4×400 team of Bryson, Leland, Andrea Allis and Ciara Christenson who lopped another four seconds off their already fast 4:10 clocking in that event.

&8220;We are used to winning, and the girls were disappointed,&8221; said USC/AC head coach Kent Viesselman. &8220;But, as I look back at our lineup, and the performances of the girls, I don’t see anything we could have done differently to move up in the team placings. Our girls competed very well.&8221;

The boys finished in fifth place in their competition, just 12 points out of third.

&8220;We had to make a couple of adjustments at mid-meet due to an injury, that probably cost us a higher place,&8221; said Viesselman, &8220;but that’s part of the game.&8221;

The best events for the boys included the high jump where Eric Youngblom and Amos Bessler finished in second and third, both with season best heights of 5 feet, 10 inches, and the long jump where Jordan Stenzel and Ryan Wach finished third and fifth, respectively.

&8220;Our boys have had a great season so far, and as we were talking about this meet a couple of weeks ago, we felt that a fourth or fifth place finish would be a good performance,&8221; said Viesselman. &8220;It’s important to remember that we had only three seniors in the lineup, and nearly half of our team is freshmen.&8221;
