A benefit dinner for the Kubu family, whose house was almost completely destroyed by fire on May 6, will be from 5 to 7 p.m. Wednesday at St. Casimir’s Catholic Church in Wells.

Denise Kubu, her fianc Leo and her three children Cody, Kandi and Kelsey, might be at the benefit. Denise suffers from terminal cancer and will be beginning another round of chemotherapy soon, so she may not be well enough to attend.

&8220;They’re doing okay. It’s tough,&8221; said family friend Michelle Lacher.

The family’s home has badly damaged during a fire May 6. No one was in the house when it caught fire. Fire officials suspected a coffee pot began the fire in the kitchen, but have not yet confirmed that.

Most of the Kubus’ belongings were unsalvageable, having been damaged by smoke and water, and one of the two family dogs was killed.

Sloppy joes, potato salad and bars will be served and there will be a silent auction. Local people and businesses have donated cakes, crafts, a flower basket, a tree, oil changes, salon gift certificates, two tickets to the Chanhassen Dinner Theatre, Twins tickets, a subscription to the Wells Mirror and a model car.

Money from the benefit will go to the Kubus to use as they see fit. Currently they are still living with a friend and have not moved into more permanent housing, said Lacher.
