Editorial: Legislature leaves USC empty-handed

Shame on the state Legislature.

Lawmakers passed a $999 million public works bill. They handed out $205 million for state programs and $500 million worth of state and local tax dollars for stadium construction projects.

And yet, the Legislature couldn’t find a nickel to aid United South Central School District with its nightmare of a school building in Wells and leaky roof in Kiester &045; something local politics has prevented.

Now the district’s school building in Kiester leaks so bad the children have to eat outside.

We would like to write that the Legislature got it right this year, because they came so close, but our concern for education of children tells us otherwise. This very important item that when all was said and done and sent to the governor, it wasn’t included.

What’s USC to do now? They don’t know. It’s a hard decision. Of course, administrators will seek grant funding, a good decision. Pay for another referendum? Three have failed. Elections are expensive. Wait till next year and ask the Legislature again? Perhaps.

Maybe the solution lies in asking the Legislature to allow the district to raise taxes so it can issue bonds for the needed construction without a referendum. Considering the district’s history, maybe the legislators will bite.

It’s just an idea, but if it works for the Twins, it can work for the Rebels.
