Eleanor Holian

Eleanor Eastvold Holian entered heaven June 19, 2006.

She was born to Seth and Enga Eastvold March 14, 1922, in Parshall, N.D., where her father first answered the &8220;call&8221; to ministry as pastor of a Lutheran congregation which grew to include service as president of Pacific Lutheran University and California Lutheran University. Her childhood as a &8220;PK&8221; (pastor’s kid) was spent in North Dakota, South Dakota, Minnesota, and Wisconsin, where she graduated from high school in 1939.

She earned her B.A. degree in 1943 from St. Olaf College in Northfield, Minn., and had a teaching fellowship at the University of Iowa from 1943 to 1944.

Darwin and Eleanor were married by her father Nov. 11, 1944, in Eau Claire, Wis. They both attended the University of Minnesota, where Darwin began medical school and Eleanor taught Spanish and French from 1944 to 1948, earning her M.A. degree in 1946.

Charlotte was born in 1948 and Barbara in 1952, both in Minneapolis.

After Darwin’s medical school, internship, Korean War service, and surgical residency, the family moved to Albert Lea, in 1954, where Darwin began his surgical practice.

Steven was born in 1954 and Ann in 1956, in Albert Lea.

After 14 wonderful years in Albert Lea, they moved to Santa Barbara, Calif., in 1968. Eleanor was a devoted wife, mother, grandmother, homemaker, and friend, involved in many civic, community, and church activities. She ministered faithfully for 18 years in Bible Study Fellowship, 12 years in Honeycomb and El Montecito Presbyterian Church Bible studies, and spoke at many retreats and events. Her passion was for the Lord Jesus Christ and His Word and for her beloved family and friends.

Eleanor would like to be remembered as an ordinary woman filled with an extraordinary God.

Immediate family survivors include her husband, Darwin; four children: Charlotte Ophaug (Randy), Barbara Mejia (Miguel), Steven Holian, and Ann Lauthen (Robert); nine grandchildren: Andrew and Aaron Ophaug; Michael, Chris, and Marc Mejia; Beth and Joel Holian; and Jennifer and David Lauthen; sister-in-law Marilyn Ettesvold; and cousin Evelyn Stueland. She was preceded in death by her parents, Seth and Enga Eastvold, and her only brother, Donald Eastvold.

Interment was at the Santa Barbara Cemetery.

A celebration of her life in Christ was at El Montecito Presbyterian Church on Friday, June 23, at noon.

Eleanor requested memorials be sent to: Bible Study Fellowship, International; Compassion International; or Insight for Living.
