Gayle Robinson, fired from her position as Freeborn County Child Protection Services supervisor in June, presented her case in front of the county’s Personnel Board of Appeals yesterday.
No decision has been made as to whether Robinson will be reinstated or not.
&8220;The intent on my part was to present the other side of the story,&8221; Robinson said. &8220;I felt that I had plenty of good things to say. I think it was a good hearing.&8221;
Because of the duration of the hearing, which began at 1 p.m. and ended at almost 7 p.m., the attorneys were asked to submit written closing briefs by Friday. The three-person board of appeals will study the briefs for a week and then meet to make a decision, either reinstating Robinson or determining that the county acted appropriately in terminating her.
Robinson was fired by the county board in June amid allegations of insubordination and poor judgment. County Administrator Ron Gabrielsen and Department of Human Services Director Darryl Meyer recommended Robinson’s termination based partly on an angry e-mail exchange between Robinson and Meyer.
Four people testified on Robinson’s behalf in addition to Robinson herself: Frank Kohl and Ben Mortensen of the Albert Lea Police Department, Dave Buhs, a former DHS employee, and David Wright, one of Robinson’s former supervisors. Gabrielsen was the only witness for the county &045; Meyer, who initially recommended Robinson’s termination, was in Alaska on a previously planned trip.
Robinson estimated that the board of appeals had about 400 pages of material to review during and before the hearing.
&8220;It went the way it was supposed to go,&8221; Gabrielsen said of the hearing. &8220;I think we followed the procedure.&8221;
The Board of Appeals was composed of Dick Borge, a former county employee, S. L. Johnson, a former county commissioner, and Toni Lowry, the personnel director for the Albert Lea Medical Center.
