The funeral for Walter H. Schneider, of 814 Clausen Ave., Albert Lea, will be at 1:30 p.m. Sunday, July 30, at Our Savior’s Lutheran Church, Albert Lea. The Rev. Wayne Halvorson and Vicar Andrew Schmidt will officiate. Visitation will be from 4 to 7 p.m. Saturday at Bonnerup Funeral Home and one hour prior to the service. Interment will be in Lakewood Cemetery. Walter suffered a fall at his home Sunday morning and died Wednesday, July 26, at 5:40 p.m. at Naeve Hospital.

Walter was born Dec. 20, 1906, in Jordan Township, Fillmore County, the son of William and Lisetta Schneider. He was baptized and confirmed in St. John’s Lutheran Church in Wykoff. After farming with his father until 1930, he drove a semi truck for Jack Boote and worked for Boote’s Hatchery in Worthington. He built a new Boote’s hatchery in Albert Lea in 1934 and managed it from 1934 to 1939. He married Emma Frankson at Spring Valley on July 10, 1934. In 1939 he purchased the Albert Lea hatchery from Jack Boote and changed the name to Schneider’s Hatchery. Through the years, he was open for business from 9:30 to 4:30 p.m. Monday through Saturday until he sold the hatchery to Subway Restaurant. Even though he closed his business at the end of July 2005, Walt continued repairing sewing machines and vacuum cleaners in a small shop on the back porch of his home. The last repair job was picked up by a customer the day after Walt’s death.

He was an active member of Our Savior’s Lutheran Church in Albert Lea, serving as deacon for many years. He also served as president, was a member of the building committee, a choir member and on other committees. He also served on the board of regents at Bethany Lutheran College in Mankato. He enjoyed spending time with his family, traveling, fishing, woodwork, and his work at the hatchery.

His first wife Emma died in 1976. He married Tena Iverson on Aug. 11, 1979, who died on July 29, 1996.

Walter is survived by three children, Carolyn Harstad (Peter) of Lakeville, Joan Harstad of Spanaway, Wash., and David Schneider (Sue) of San Jose, Calif. ; 16 grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; and son-in-law Ken Lederer.

He was preceded in death by his first wife, Emma (1904-1976), his daughter Kathryn Lederer (1944-1988), his second wife, Tena (1910-1996), his parents, sisters, Bertha Schumacher, Esther Nehls, Ruth Fluegel, Alice Riggle Edna Davidson; brothers George, Arnold, Alvin and Lothar.

Memorials are preferred for Our Savor’s Lutheran Church, Bethany Lutheran College and E.L.S. Synod, Mankato.
