Mattie Wachlin, 82, Albert Lea

The funeral service for Mattie E. Wachlin, of Albert Lea, will be held at 2:30 p.m. on Thursday, Aug. 10, at Bonnerup Funeral Service, Albert Lea. The Rev. Wayne Halvorson and Vicar Andy Schmidt will officiate. Interment will be in Hillcrest Cemetery. Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at Bonnerup Funeral Service, Albert Lea, and one hour before the service at the funeral home.

Mattie died on Sunday, Aug. 6, 2006, at the Albert Lea Medical Center. She was 82. She was born on Jan. 6, 1924, in Hayfield, Minn., the daughter of Frank and Elizabeth (Hofdman) Howden. She graduated from Austin High School.

She married Erwin Wachlin on Jan. 22, 1944, at the Waltham Lutheran Church Parsonage.

Mattie had worked at Banquet Foods, Club 90, Land-O-Lakes, and she had also drove a bus and drove for Ride Services.

Mattie enjoyed making quilts and afghans. She treasured the time with her family and was always there to help the grandchildren with anything they needed. She was a member of the Eagle’s and V.F.W. Auxiliary.

Mattie is survived by seven children: Denny Reinhold Wachlin and his special friend Janice of Newburyport, Mass., Linda L. Spain of Albert Lea, Irene M. Erickson of Albert Lea, William W. Wachlin and his wife Connie of Lake Mills, Iowa, Susann E. Nava of Albert Lea, James E. Wachlin and his wife Rhonda of Biloxi, Miss., Ruth Ann Wachlin of Albert Lea; 17 grandchildren, 16 great-grandchildren; sister Nellie Bartlett and her husband Keith of Sargeant.

She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband in 1994, twin sons John R. and William G. Wachlin, son Robert Wachlin, and special friend Irvin Olson.
