GLENVILLE &8212; Firefighters from Glenville, Myrtle and Hayward responded to a house fire at 16244 803rd Ave. Saturday afternoon at the home of Tom Henderson.
The blaze destroyed the top floor of the two-story home, but the main floor and the basement were still intact with some water and smoke damage, according to Hayward Fire Chief Eric Henderson.
No one was in the home at the time of the fire. The cause had not been determined as of Saturday.
Henderson will likely have a long ride home from his trip to northern Minnesota, where he was at the time of the fire.
Firefighters contacted Henderson by cell phone. He was notified of the fire at his home.
The call came in before 3 p.m. when Henderson&8217;s neighbor Dean Westrum spotted the house on fire and called 911.
The porch light was still on as the building burned and firefighters worked to extinguish the fire. Henderson had a gun collection, and ammunition in the house periodically exploded within the flames.
At 3:17 p.m., firefighters shut down their hoses and waited about 10 minutes for more tankers to show up on the scene with water.
One of the major concerns for firefighters was to put the fire out before it reached the basement. It was suspected that there were fuel tanks there.
Knutson was the first firefighter on the scene and showed up in his private vehicle. Knutson lives just a few miles away from the scene.
