Dr. Gloria Chung, 81, West Allenhurst, N.J.

Gloria W. Chung, M.D., retired general and child psychiatrist, age 81, of West Allenhurst, N.J., died Sunday Sept. 3, 2006, at her home.

She was born in Toisan Guandong Province, China and came to the United States in 1929.

Dr. Chung, born Gloria Wong, grew up in Albert Lea. Her father, Sam Wong, owned and operated the Canton Cafe, a Chinese/American restaurant in Albert Lea, and Dr. Chung and other family members could often be found doing homework at the Canton Cafe between serving customers.

Dr. Chung graduated from Albert Lea High School in 1941. She attended the University of Michigan and she then received her bachelor of science degree from the University of Minnesota in 1945 and her medical degree in 1949 from the University of Minnesota Medical School.

She joined the staff of the Community Mental Health Center of The Jersey Shore Medical Center in Neptune, where she served as director of outpatient dervices from 1974 to 1989. Dr. Chung retired from private practice in 1997.

She received the Daughters of The American Revolution Award in 1941, which was presented to her by Minnesota Gov. Harold Stassen. Dr. Chung received the Community Service Award from the Chinese-American Planning Council in January, 2004. She received a Certificate of Special Congressional Recognition in January, 2004, from the United States House of Representatives for outstanding and invaluable service to the community.

Dr. Chung was predeceased by her son Rodney D. Chung, who died in 1982, and by her husband Edwin Y. Chung who died in 1997.

She is survived by a son Jock K. Chung and daughter-in-law Margaret Png and a grandson Brian Chung of Washington, D.C., three sisters and one brother.

Visitation will be held in the Buckley Funeral Home 509 Second Ave., Asbury Park, N.J., on Thursday from 7 to 9 p.m. A funeral service will be conducted in the funeral home on Friday at noon.
