Editorial: Exercise caution this weekend

Gas prices have dipped a little and it&8217;s a long holiday weekend. Many people may be tempted to take to the highways this weekend.

If you do, we urge you to use extra caution. There will be a greater number of people out there, increasing the chances for accidents. Last year, eight people died in crashes on Minnesota roadways over the Labor Day weekend.

Last weekend wasn&8217;t even a holiday weekend, and seven people were killed on Minnesota roads. This makes it one of the deadliest weekends of the year.

Driver errors led to most of the five fatal crashes, but contributing factors included alcohol, unsafe high speeds, distraction, judgment errors, failure to use seat belts and improper use of child restraints.

A lapse in focus behind the wheel can result in death.

Therefore, we urge drivers to take breaks to stay alert behind the wheel this weekend. Refrain from alcohol use if you&8217;re driving and minimize distraction.

The Safe and Sober campaign will be in full force over the weekend. Extra troopers will be on the highways and byways to enforce Minnesota&8217;s drunken driving laws.

Things may be busy and crazy this weekend, but think before getting behind the wheel. It could be the difference between life and death.
