GLENVILLE &8212; Homecoming started out well for the Glenville-Emmons football team, but it was the ending that left a sour taste as the Wolverines lost to Madelia, 46-28.

The Wolverines jumped out to a 14-8 first quarter lead thanks to the big play.

Jarrad Knutson got his team on the board first with a 33-yard run to the end zone, and he followed that up with a 51-yard pitch and catch with Aaron Wuerflein.

Madelia, which is in its first season as an individual football program, would score three touchdowns in the second quarter to go into the locker room with a 32-14 advantage.

&8220;They run an option which is always hard to defend, but then you add the fact that their quarterback is extremely accurate and he can execute the ball fake very well and it is that much harder,&8221; G-E head coach Jim Smith said. &8220;Since they are a new program you don&8217;t know a whole lot about what they like to do which makes it difficult.&8221;

Despite the deficit the Wolverines would claw their way back into the game in the second half Knutson would score on a quarterback draw from 6 yards out and capped the team&8217;s scoring in the third with another rushing score to close the gap to just four points heading into the fourth.

Knutson&8217;s final touchdown was set up by a blocked punt recovered by Arthur Wright. Knutson also came up big in the third when he picked off a Madelia pass as it was marching down the field for another score.

The Wolverines would press to try to take the lead which proved costly late in the game with Madelia cashing in on five G-E interceptions on the night.

&8220;A lot of those were in garbage time when we were trying to catch up,&8221; Smith said. &8220;But we continued to make mistakes at the wrong time that cost us.&8221;

Knutson led the rushing attack with 124 yards on just 13 carries and the three touchdowns, and he also went 19 of 38 through the air for 199 yards.

Logan Hansen caught eight passes for 63 yards and Aaron Wuerflein had two for 66 yards and the touchdown.

The Wolverines (0-4) will look to break into the win column this week when it travels to face LeRoy-Ostander.
