Trailing by just five at halftime, the Glenville-Emmons football team saw its chance for a win slip away early in the third quarter due to a series of mistakes.

Granada-Huntley-East Chain/Martin Luther took advantage of the short field given to it by the Wolverines to score twice and win 31-14.

The Wolverines bobbled the opening kickoff of the second half leaving them pinned deep in their own territory. A quick three-and-out led to a GHECML score.

A fumble and a blocked punt on G-E&8217;s next two possessions led to another score and a deficit the Wolverines could not make up.

&8220;We had too many errors and to their credit they capitalized on the short field,&8221; G-E head coach Jim Smith said. &8220;I am disappointed in the outcome but not my kids&8217; effort, but this is a tough one to swallow.&8221;

The Wolverines didn&8217;t help themselves with three dropped balls that would have either been scores or set up a quality scoring opportunity.

G-E&8217;s lone first half score came on an 18-yard pass from Jarrad Knutson to Aaron Wuerflein. The team&8217;s other tally came in the third when Knutson found Garret Schumaker on a screen pass that went for 42 yards.

Knutson had a big game throwing for 199 yards on 23 of 43 passing with two touchdowns and one interception. He also ran for 125 yards on the ground.

&8220;You love what he brings to the table, but we have got to get help from others and our line because their is no reason he should have to run that much,&8221; Smith said.

Schumaker caught four passes for 61 yards and rushed for 18 more while Logan Hansen hauled in 11 passes for 89 yards.

Smith was pleased with his defense when it wasn&8217;t backed into a corner as it held its own against GHECML.

Nick Stadheim had 10 tackles and four for a loss to lead G-E while Wuerflein added 13 tackles.

The Wolverines (0-2) will play their first home game of the season Friday when they host winless Cleveland in Glenville.

&8220;Two road games is very tough to begin the season and I love the fan support we get on the road but nothing is like playing at home,&8221; Smith said. &8220;Cleveland was a win for us last year and we know it will be a battle, but we want to be 1-2 with homecoming the following week.&8221;
