Owatonna downs Tigers, 6-1

The Owatonna girls&8217; tennis team defeated Albert Lea on its home courts Thursday, 6-1.

The Tigers were using a new lineup which got mixed results against a talented Big Nine Huskies&8217; squad.

Albert Lea No. 1 singles player Dezeray Jacobs lost her match 1-6, 2-6 and Amanda Leonard fell at No. 2 0-6, 1-6.

Kelli Hanson played at No. 3 for the first time this season but could not pull out the win losing both sets by the matching score of 2-6. Sarah Wenum was also playing singles at the varsity level for the first time this season and lost 3-6,3-6.

&8220;We are kind of feeling out the lineup and trying to see who can play where and be successful,&8221; Albert Lea head coach Sean Gillam said. &8220;It is something we will continue to work on.&8221;

The top doubles team of Cara Thorn and Liz Thompson picked up the Tigers&8217; lone win by a score of 6-4, 6-4.

Niki and Hali Hendrickson teamed up in the No. 2 doubles match for the first time this year and played well despite the 3-6, 4-6 loss.

Dani Merfeld and Cori Madson concluded the match with a 1-6, 1-6 loss.

&8220;I was very pleased with the top two doubles teams,&8221; Gillam said. &8220;Liz and Cara got the win and I thought the Hendrickson sisters played very well.&8221;

Winning junior varsity matches for the Tigers were Holly Bohlen, Amy Bohlen, Jenna Sager, Sara Jensen, Michelle Hartmann and Taylor Nelson.
