Mary A. (Walker) Keil, age 91, of Bloomington, Minn., died peacefully Sept. 27, 2006. She enjoyed an active life until Sept. 20, 2006, when she suffered a stroke.
She grew up in Mt. Sterling, Wis., graduated from Waldorf College, Forest City, Iowa, and taught grade school in Rake and Springville, Iowa. She loved teaching and wrote, &8220;Every September I relive the excitement of my teaching days.&8221;
In 1941 she married Dr. Marcus Keil. They lived in Minneapolis and Mankato, moved to Albert Lea in 1951 where they remained for more than 40 years, and then Bloomington.
She loved her family and loved life. She graciously entertained her husband&8217;s professional colleagues, family, friends, and even friends of friends. She produced expert hand work (especially Hardanger) and was an accomplished photographer and an avid antique collector, never passing up an opportunity to &8220;go antiquing.&8221; Flowers and vegetables from her garden were plentiful and distributed to friends and neighbors. She was active in many volunteer organizations including PEO and the Albert Lea Historical Museum, and was instrumental in launching the Meals on Wheels program in Albert Lea.
She had a strong affiliation with the Lutheran church where she belonged to women&8217;s organizations and taught Sunday School. She was proud of the ordained ministers in her family: two brothers, two brothers-in-law and a nephew.
She was preceded in death by husband, Dr. Marcus A. Keil; parents Ole and Ellen Walker, brothers Harry, Emil and Chester; sisters Alice and Dorothy; and great-granddaughter Amanda Olson.
Survivors include sister, Pead Hannevick of Stoughton, Wis.; daughter Mary Ellen Brekke of Mendota Heights; son Marcus John Keil of Nevada City, Calif.; granddaughters Karin (Christopher) Olson of Minneapolis and Kristine Valdivia of Apple Valley; great-grandchildren Annika and Greta Olson and Isabel, Grace and Jesus Valdivia.
