A truck coming from Albert Lea&8217;s wastewater treatment plant spilled 100 to 200 gallons of sludge early Tuesday evening during its haul along County Road 19.

Tuesday was the first day the city started hauling the sludge from the plant to preapproved fields to be used as fertilizer, said Steve Jahnke, city engineer and director of public works.

Jahnke said the driver of the truck spilled the sludge into an area approximately 30 feet long by three feet wide near the intersection of 840th Avenue and 180th Street. The incident happened at about 5 p.m.

It did not reach any large bodies of water, and it has since been cleaned up, he said, calling it a &8220;minor&8221; spill. Normal measures have been taken, however, and it has been reported to all necessary agents, Jahnke said.
