Tigers finish eighth at conference

MANKATO &045; The Albert Lea girls&8217; swim team finished eighth out of 10 teams over the weekend at the Big Nine Conference Meet in Mankato.
The Tigers had 162 points finishing six behind Austin while Fairbault swam away with the championship with 354 points and Rochester Century was second with 329.5.
Amanda Walters led the Tigers by winning the conference title in the 100 backstroke by nearly a full second over the runner-up in a time of 1:03.62. She swam the first 50 in 30.58 while no other swimmer was below 31.35.
Walters also had a top 10 finish in the 50 freestyle posting a time of 26.02 to take eighth and Samantha Cole was 11th in 26.65.
Gracie Thomas swam well in the 100 breaststroke taking fifth in 1:13.81 finishing in a group of four swimmers that separated second through fifth by just over a second. Bria Schreiber was not far behind taking 10th in 1:15.76.
Jackie Elwood swam her best time this year in the 100 butterfly coming to the wall in 1:06.55 to finish in sixth place, while Cole finished 10th in 1:07.57. Elwood added a 16th place showing in the 200 individual medley.
Alaina Schulz knocked over a second off her seed time in the 100 free swimming a 57.94 to finish in seventh place with Whitney Walters taking ninth in 58.43.
In the relays, the Tiger 400 free relay team of Elwood, Cole, Schulz and Whitney Walters finished fifth in 3:54.47. The 200 free relay squad of Elwood, Amanda Walters, Korbin Wayne and Whitney Walters came to the wall in sixth place with a mark of 1:46.32.
Albert Lea would have been in lane for another top five relay time in the 200 medley but it was disqualified from the race.
The Tigers are back in action Nov. 8 when they take part in the section meet in Austin.
