Emma Mattson was born to Finnish immigrants in Biwabik, on the Iron Range on June 28, 1919, one of 11 siblings. She received her nurses&8217; training at St. Luke&8217;s in Duluth and became a registered nurse, working in surgery and later as a charge nurse at Hillcrest Nursing Home in Wayzata. She married Vernon Ellsworth Tukua on May 17, 1947.
She was first and foremost a devoted mother and grandmother, absolutely delighting in her grandchildren. Emma also had a passionate interest in music and art, loved to play the piano and work in sculpture and drawing. She took a special interest in and appreciated nature in all aspects: birds (especially cardinals) and animals, treating these creatures with caring and respect, and carefully tending her plants.
She will long be remembered for her consideration of others before herself.
A memorial service will be held on Wednesday, Nov. 15, at 3 p.m. at West Freeborn Lutheran Church, Freeborn. Arrangements are by David Lee Funeral Home of Wayzata and Bonnerup Funeral Services of Albert Lea.
All memorials received will be divided between West Freeborn Lutheran Church and the high school band funds of Emma&8217;s grandchildren.
