Kathryn A. Christenson, age 91, of Belmond, Iowa, formerly of Scarville, died Sunday, Nov. 19, 2006, at the Belmond Medical Center Hospice after a brief illness.
Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 22, at Trinity Lutheran Church, 304 Third Ave. NE, Belmond. The Rev. Troy Flibsen will be officiating. Burial will be in the Belmond Cemetery.
Visitation was Tuesday from 5 to 7 p.m. at the Andrews Funeral Home, 516 First St. S.E.,
Belmond and one hour prior to the services at church. The family suggests memorials may be directed to the Trinity Lutheran Church Senior Choir, Trinity Lutheran Church Youth Bell Choir, or to the donor&8217;s choice.
Kathryn was born on a farm near Eagle Grove, Iowa, on April 3, 1915, to Knute and Alma (Gunderson) Severson, the fourth of seven children.
She attended country school through the eighth grade and then attended Belmond High School. Following her mother&8217;s passing away, Kathryn stepped into the role of helping her father raise and care for the needs of her siblings.
On March 7, 1935, she was united in marriage to Clifford E. Christenson of Kanawha, Iowa. Their union of 58 years was blessed with two children, David and Karen.
Following their marriage they farmed in the Belmond area until 1950, when they purchased farm near Lake Mills, Iowa, where they farmed for 30 years. In 1980, they retired to a home in Belmond.
Kathryn enjoyed her life on the farm, gardening, canning, sewing, and helping with the livestock.
She was active in the Immanuel Lutheran Church, the Scarville Community School, and civic
groups in Scarville and Belmond. Her warm personality and sense of fun was enjoyed by many.
She especially enjoyed her family, making quilts, clothing, and doll clothes for children and grandchildren who call her Grandma Kat. She cherished every opportunity that meant spending time with her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren.
She leaves to celebrate her life a son, David (Ruth) Christenson of Emmons; a daughter, Karen (Herbert) Brand of Hollandale; her six grandchildren, Lori (Clark) Ericksen, Jodi Kilborn, Danny (Heidi) Christenson, Jill (Peters) Louters, Stephanie (Sean) Passingham, Matthew (Amy) Brand; 12 great-grandchildren Ryan, Kara, Nathan, Brianne, Scott, Morgan, Lindsay, Alicia, Pieter, Jacob, Kathryn, and Abigail; and step-grandchildren, Jocelyn, Madison, and Drew; her brother, Kenneth Severson of Clarion, Iowa; and a sister, Elaine Lenz of Mason City, Iowa,; a brother-in-law, Lloyd (Eunice) Christenson of Belmond; and sisters-in-law, Maxine Morris of Hayward, Calif., and Carol Christenson of Forest City, Iowa; and many nieces and nephews.
Kathryn was preceded in death by her parents; husband Clifford on Oct. 20, 1993; three sisters, Myrtle, Leila, and Betty; and a brother, Sanford.
