Cdr. Lyle Ellinghuysen, 78, Albert Lea

Cdr. Lyle Ellinghuysen died January 18, 2007 after a lengthy illness. Services will be at 1:30 PM on Tuesday, Jan. 23. Family members and ftiends meet at 12:30 PM Tuesday in the Gathering Room of Salem Lutheran Church, 115 N. Washington Ave., Albert Lea, Minn.

Lyle Ben Ellinghuysen was born June 11, 1928. Parents were Mildred (Henslin) and Ben Gustaf Ellinghuysen. He was baptized on July 22, 1928 and was confirmed into the Lutheran faith. He graduated from Grand Meadow High School in 1946 where he participated in many sports included: baseball, football, and basketball. Lyle graduated from Winona State Teachers College on May 31, 195 1. Winona State College conferred the degree of Masters of Science on Lyle on August 19, 1972.

He married Shirley Ann Hall on January 27, 1951 at the Congregational Church in Spring Valley, Minn. Son, Jerry Alan was born on November 25, 195 1. Lyle left on his first wedding anniversary to report to Officer Training School in Newport, R.I. He was there for four months and graduated with the rank of Ensign. After graduation he reported to his first ship, the U.S.S. Delta AR-9 repair ship. The ship went to Japan for nine months returning to San Diego for 8 months of shore duty. The family always declared it was the greatest of life when the ship was in. He served on two more ships and spent an additional 14 months over seas, earning the rank of Commander, before being discharged in 1955. A second son, James Paul, was born on March 31, 1956.

Mr. Ellinghuysen began his teaching career in Stewartville, Minn. in 1954 and was there six years. He coached the basketball, football, and track teams. He reinlisted in the navy and served active duty for two more years. He also served in the reserves. Lyle began teaching in the Albert Lea High School in 1963 where he taught industrial arts, electricity, and electronics. He also coached several sports. Lyle and Shirley welcomed a granddaughter, Anne, on February 26, 1982. Lyle retired in 1984 and remained active and interested in many hobbies and organizations including the Elks, American Legion and VFW. He was very involved in Salem Lutheran Church where he served on church council, the stewardship committee, and volunteered as an usher. He also enjoyed volunteering at track practice for many years. Sports were the love of his life, second only to his family and the U. S. Navy.

Lyle is survived by his wife, Shirley; son, Jerry and his wife, Joanna of Ft. Collins, Colo.; granddaughter, Anne of LaCrosse, Wis. and her fiance, Greg Jeneary of Iowa City, IA; and son, Jim Ellinghuysen of St. Paul, Minn. He was preceded in death by his mother, Mildred and father, Ben.
