Elizabeth Zevenbergen, 93, Sibley

Elizabeth Zevenbergen was born to Peter and Cornelia (De Jong) Runia on June 25, 1913 at Sully, Iowa. She was the second to the youngest in a family of 11 children. She moved to the Sibley area when she was 1 1/2 years old and lived the rest of her life in Osceola County, Iowa. She attended Wilson No. 6 country school. She did household duties with different families helping with newborn babies.

She married Garrett Zevenbergen on Jan. 14, 1931. They farmed for 36 years near Allendorf and Sibley. They moved into Sibley in 1967. Garrett worked at the sale barn until he retired. Garrett passed away on June 10, 1994.

Elizabeth enjoyed crocheting, puzzling, reading and working in her flower garden. She also enjoyed weekly Scrabble games with her sisters-in-law and a niece. She moved into Country View Manor on Dec. 4, 2002. She was a member of the Sibley Christian Reformed Church.

Funeral services for Elizabeth will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Feb. 5.

Those left to cherish her memories are three sons and daughters-in-law: Gene and Avonne Zevenbergen of Yucaipa, Calif., Don and Marilyn Zevenbergen of Sibley, Iowa, and Larry and Sylvia Zevenbergen of Hollandale; five daughters and three sons-in-law: Loretta and Allen Rowe of Harris, Iowa; Lilian Zevenbergen of Modesto, Calif., Pearl and Charles Vander Pol of Ashton, Iowa, Ruby Jonas of Belleville, Kan., and Ruth and Rick Sikma of North Pole, Ark.; 22 grandchildren; 54 great-grandchildren; two great-great-grandchildren; and sister-in-law, Irene Runia of Sibley, Iowa.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Garrett; a daughter, Caroline (8 months old); son-in-law, Dick Jonas; six brothers: infant brother Cornelius, Cornelius (Case), Ralph, John, Peter (10 years old) and Peter P.; four sisters: Anna Vogel, Itje (6 years old), Elizabeth (2 months old), and Ethel Zevenbergen; and three infant grandchildren: Sandra Vander Pol, Scott Vander Pol and Joe Bellin.
