USC wrestlers take third at Hayfield Tourney

The eighth-ranked United South Central wrestling team finished third at the Hayfield Tournament Saturday with 130 points. The Rebels finished behind a pair of wrestling powers in Creighton Prep, Neb. And Anoka which won the tournament with 234 points.
Fifth-ranked Seth Amberg was the lone Rebel to make a trip to the finals where he went up against Anoka&8217;s second-ranked Jake Begin at 125. Amberg battled into the second period before he was pinned in 3:26.
Daniel Sandt bounced back from a semifinal loss at 130 to finish third with a dominating 12-3 major decision over Adam Murphy of Blue Earth.
No. 10 Jake Bonsack needed overtime to get past Creighton Prep&8217;s George Faulconbridge at 140. However, Bonsack would get the takedown in extra time to take third place 3-1.
At 145, Brian Wood won another close third place match 3-2 over Blue Earth&8217;s Daniel Eckhardt 3-2, while Sam Stevermer took all of the drama out of his third place match at 152 dominating Nick Mizaur of Creighton Prep 20-8.
Heavyweight Cassidy Carlson was the Rebels&8217; final wrestler to take third. Carlson pinned Blue Earth&8217;s Gabe Sturtz in 2:57.
Nick Stevermer lost his third place match 5-1 to Hayfield&8217;s Tyler Stobel at 171, and Mike Linder lost a tough 1-0 decision to Creighton Prep&8217;s Chris Snyder at 215 to finish in fourth place.
Preston Staloch finished fourth at 112 wrestling well against tough competition including the third place match where he fell to No. 2 (in Class AAA) Paul Tellgren of Anoka.
Zach Wigern finished in sixth place at 103 for the Rebels as did Chris Escherich at 119 and Jake Herman at 160.
