Viola Beatrice Astrup was born June 26, 1918, in Glyndon, Minn. to Henry Everett and Gertrude Mae (Bradford) Hite. Determined to acquire an education the family gave her the oppurtunity to graduate from Kindred Minnesota High School and Moorhead State College, Moorhead, Minn. Beatrice was valedictorian in both schools where she majored in English, Art and Education. She taught in numerous schools and acquired status of principal.
Beatrice met her husband Justin Nicolai Astrup in a church choir. They were married February 14, 1943 while Justin was on furlough from the Army Air Force during WWII. Upon Justin&8217;s discharge from the military, he and Beatrice moved to rural Gardner, N.D., where they farmed for 50 years, raising grain, sugar beets and soybeans.
Beatrice loved the Lord and loved life. She enjoyed teaching K-12 in the public schools and church, writing articles of interest for the newspaper and magazines, planning and creating school and community programs and events. She spoke weekly on the radio program, the Christian Women Speaks and was active in local politics and the Red River Valley Board of Home Economics. Beatrice enjoyed fine choral/orchestral music, gardening, shopping, physical fitness, family and bible studies.
She is lovingly survived by her daughter Sharon Astrup-Scott and husband Robert Ackland, Albert Lea, Minn.; two grandsons, Phillip Astrup Scott and wife Jenni (Haroldson); Perter Gorham Scott and wife Ruth Ann (Merkouris); two great-grandchildren, Elizabeth Ruth and Camille Anne; one brother, Everette Hite and wife Doris; nieces and nephews. Beatrice was preceded in death by her parents, her husband and a sister.
The family wishes to thank Hospice of the Red River Valley for their loving care of Beatrice.
