Editorial: Lets hope the surge in Iraq goes well

A new security structure began Monday in Iraq as part of the surge of troops ordered by President George W. Bush. The new structure has an Iraqi general in charge of operations in the capital and more Iraqi police and soldiers manning roadblocks.
Whether you favor or oppose the war in Iraq, let&8217;s all hope the surge is successful. A lot of it hinges on whether Iraq can produce the necessary levels of troops. A lot of it boils down to whether people in Iraq want to consider themselves Sunni and Shiite or to consider themselves Iraqis.
It appears from public opinion and congressional debate that this will be the final push for America in that war-torn country. If the surge is successful, then good, our sons, daughters, mothers, fathers, friends and neighbors can come home and let Iraqis run Iraq. If the surge is unsuccessful, then OK, our sons, daughters, mothers, fathers, friends and neighbors can come home, the Shiite will fight a civil war and likely defeat the minority Sunni insurgency for control of the country.
Is either way good or bad? We&8217;re not going to get into that today.
All we are saying is that since America is surging its troops levels, since we all are making this commitment, let&8217;s hope things go well. Let&8217;s hope our soldiers, sailors, airmen and Marines come home safe.
