Sylvia Johnson, 88, New Richland

Funeral services for Sylvia Dorothy Johnson of New Richland will be held at 11 a.m. Monday at the Cross of Glory Lutheran Church in Hartland. The Revs. Dennis Frank and Kent Otterman will officiate. Visitation will be Sunday from 3 to 7 p.m. at Friedrich Funeral Home, New Richland, and one hour prior to the service at the church. Interment will be in the Hartland Cemetery.

Mrs. Johnson died Thursday morning, May 17, 2007, at the New Richland Care Center. She was 88 years old.

Sylvia was born July 30, 1918, outside of Fairmont, Rutland Township, the daughter of Adolph and Elizabeth (Keithahn) Kiester. She was a graduate of Fairmont High School in 1936 and Mankato State Teachers College. Sylvia taught public school in District 21, Waseca, District 69 in Ormsby, and at the Hartland Public Schools for many years. She was also employed by the E.F. Johnson Company for five years and the Birds Eye Foods seasonally.

Sylvia was united in marriage to Delmer Johnson on Aug. 22, 1943, in Fairmont. She was a member of the Cross of Glory Lutheran Church and was active in the church circle. She lived in rural Hartland from 1943 until going to the New Richland Care Center in 2001.

Sylvia enjoyed her teaching and was an excellent homemaker who loved baking and cooking.

Sylvia is survived by her children, Douglas and his wife Charlene of Marshalltown, Iowa, James and his wife Julaine of Hartland, Dale of Hartland, Rosalyn and her husband Bill Voigt of Maplewood, David and his wife Kristine of Hartland. Surviving grandchildren include Stephan (Kathleen) Johnson, Brian (Janella) Johnson, Laurie (Chris) DeMeyer, Katherine (Matt) Eby, Joshua Johnson, Heidi Johnson, Hillary Johnson, Nathan Voigt, Hailey Johnson, Presley Johnson and Aubrey Johnson. There are seven great-grandchildren and one sister, Gloria Kiester of Northfield.

She was preceded in death by her parents, husband Delmer, grandson Joseph Voigt, four brothers and two sisters.
